In the last assembly elections, Shubhendu Adhikari, fiery leader and one-time close confidant of Mamta Didi, defeated her in Nandigram. She had to shift to Bhabanipur, vacated by one of her close confidants, to be elected with a margin of more than 60000 votes, sources say. This time, Adhikar is contesting from Nandgram and Bhawanipore, the source says.

The BJP believes that by putting up a tough fight, she is likely to curb her mobility; otherwise, she tries to visit every constituency during elections to convince supporters of the need for her continued rule for the area's development, the source says. Bhawanipore is a slightly different constituency because nearly 40% of voters are from outside and are from the business community, generally considered to be BJP supporters, the source says.

Adhikari is new to the constituency, whereas Mamta Didi has represented it almost 11 times in the past and knows almost every voter by name and every lane in the constituency, the source says. This is going to give Adhikari a tough time, the source says.
